The burning of Tsotyli

During the Occupation, Tsotyli came under Italian rule. In the mountains, the EAM guerrillas, who were claiming the presidency, neutralized all the non-Eamist resistance groups that first appeared in the area of Kastoria and Voio and had been active since April 1942. [3] [4]

The Italian occupation authorities reacted by issuing an order calling on all gendarmerie stations to hand over their weapons to the nearest towns, where there were Italian guards until February 4 (1943). According to Constantine Antoniou, the result of this order was that several gendarmes joined the Eamic groups because they were afraid of being captured by the Italians. [5] mountainous. The united Eamic groups captured Tsotyli, which had been abandoned by its Italian guard, on the night of 18 February. Many residents who were unable to seek refuge in Kozani or Kastoria enlisted in the EAM. [6] One month later, on March 28, a strong Italian force from Thessaly invaded Voio to punish the guerrillas. They retreated to the surrounding mountains, causing the Italians to set fire to Tsotyli and other villages. "The smoke from the unfortunate Tsotyli was visible from the rebel-held villages of Pentalofos and Dotsiko." [7]
