Geography - Name
Palaioxari is located A from the Wall on the northern slope of the mountain range Trikorfo, on the provincial road Anathemas - Teichiou, at a distance of 29 km NE from Nafpaktos and 54 km W of Lidoriki. Until 1959 it was called Kato Paleoxari, when it was renamed FEK: 48/1959 [3]. During the period of Turkish rule and Ali Pasha, it is also referred to as "Paliokustourio". In 1806, the English officer Martin W. Leak referred to the site as "Hani Palaioxari" [5], between the present-day settlements of Palaioxari (Kato Palaioxari) and Potidania (Ano Palaioxari), as a settlement, while the French traveler François Poucheville in 1815, it refers separately to the two settlements [6] [4].
The word Palaioxari comes from its composition from the Greek "old" and the Turkish "hisar" which means castle (Palaio-hissar = old-hsar = Paleoxari), ie Palaiokastro [6]. In the area of Profitis Ilias, two miles north of the village near the left bank of Mornos, some cystoid tombs have been found. The attraction of the village is the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with its two bell towers. The villagers are engaged in animal husbandry.
