Administrative Region : Peloponnese
Regional unit : Lakonia
Nomia in Monemvasia is a settlement in the former province of Epidaurus Limira in the prefecture of Laconia.
Geography and settlement name
It is about four to five kilometers south of Monemvasia, in the municipality of which it now belongs. It is located on the road that continues south to Xifia beach and the villages of Lira and Elliniko. The name of the settlement is probably attributed to the rich vegetation that surrounds the settlement. The port of the village is the coastal settlement of Xifia, which has a small bay.
Population data
In 1959 it had 204 inhabitants and was the seat of a homonymous community which included the villages of Agios Stefanos, Agios Fokas and Pratazia, a settlement that was later renamed Agia Paraskevi, with a total population of 462 inhabitants. Today the settlement has 47 permanent residents according to the latest census, although its actual population should be calculated to a lesser extent.
Historical data
In 1944, the village was set on fire by the guerrillas and its inhabitants fled to the countryside and the surrounding villages.
Residents' concerns
The main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture, mainly olive cultivation. At the borders of the village there is a dry river that pre-watered the vegetable and other crops.
