Nithavri or Nithavris is a village in the municipality of Amari, in the regional unit of Rethymno, Crete. According to the 2011 census it has 405 inhabitants. It is 53 km from Rethymnon and is built at an altitude of 500 m. [1] The village's economy is based on livestock and dairy products are produced.

Stergios Spanakis states that the name is pre-Greek. The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Itavri. In the Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas it is mentioned as Itavri or Lithavri with 237 inhabitants and 327 due chores and in the census of Vasilikata of 1630 it is mentioned as Itavri. [1] The 1834 census conducted by the Egyptians recorded 13 Christian families and 2 Turkish women living in the village. In the 1881 census it had 252 Christians and 21 Turkish inhabitants. In the 1900 census it had 357 inhabitants. The 1920 census lists it as the seat of a homonymous rural municipality. [1] In 1925, the seat of the homonymous community was defined until the Kapodistrian administrative division, when it was annexed to the Municipality of Kourites. [2]

In detail, the demographic course of the village according to the censuses:

The village is located at the foot of Psiloritis with a view to the Libyan Sea and the valley of Amari. There is a stone fountain in the main square. [3] The main church of the parish is the three-aisled church of Agios Nektarios. Prior to its construction, the parish church belonged to the Archangel Michael, in 1900. The cemetery church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Outside the village is the frescoed church of Panagia Asfendamiani, probably a catholic of an old monastery, whose cells are still preserved around the church. Today the temple functions as a holy water. [4]

In 1882 a school was founded in the village, which from 1889 was recognized as a primary school. It was housed in a house in Katochori. In 1901 the building of the faculty was completed, which was replaced in 1924 by a newer one. The school continued to operate until 2010, when it merged with Fourfoura's four-seat school. [4]
