Geography - History
The island is located very close to the western shores of the Aitoliko lagoon, east of the Acheloos river and is only 4 km northwest of Aitoliko. [1] It used to be called Androvitsa and with this name it was recognized in 1928 as part of the then community of Aitoliko. In 1940, however, it was abolished. [2] An important attraction is the chapel of Agia Paraskevi, which is located on a hill overlooking the lagoon and is considered the oldest in the wider area of Aitoliko. It is a cross-roofed church with an elevated octagonal dome and was built in 1698. The owners are mentioned as "Colonel Giannakis Lounterekas with his brother Alexander and the monk Makarios". It is celebrated every year on July 25 and 26. [3] It was officially recognized as a settlement called Nisaki in 1981 and was annexed to the then municipality of Aitoliko. [4] According to the Kallikratis program, it belongs to the municipal community of Aitoliko, which belongs to the municipal unit of Aetoliko of the municipality of the Holy City of Messolonghi and according to the 2011 census has a population of 58 inhabitants.
