Neos Zygos (Νέος Ζυγός) Xanthi

Neos Zygos is a village in the Municipality of Abdera with 395 permanent residents (2011 census) and is about 3 km from the city of Xanthi. [1] [2]

According to the Kapodistrias Plan, Neos Zygos existed until the end of 2010, a settlement of the Municipality of Vistonidos based in Genisea. Based on the new administrative division provided by the Kallikratis Plan, the village joined the Municipality of Abdera. Neos Zygos together with Paleo Zygos, Afxentiou, Paleo Katramio, Petinos, Feloni and Diomidia constitute the municipal community of Diomidia with a total population of 4421 inhabitants.

Administrative changes

The village was recognized in 1928 and joined the community of Chionistra in the prefecture of Rodopi while in 1944 it joined the prefecture of Xanthi. In 1997 it joined the municipality of Vistonidos and in 2010 the municipality of Abdera. [3]
Location and Access

Neos Zygos is adjacent to the settlements of the municipal community of Diomedia and the city of Xanthi. [4]

Demographics

Today the population is 395 permanent residents (2011 census), [5] showing a decrease compared to the 2001 census, where the population was 497. [6] Population fluctuations are shown in the table below.

Sport

The Hercules Neos Zygos Educational Sports Association [7] was officially founded in 1952 and represents the village in football, participating in the local championships of Ε.Π.Σ. Xanthi. [8]

In 2011 he became champion of Ε.Π.Σ. Xanthi, however, did not participate in the 4th National Championship. [9] 8 years later, in 2019, he became the EPS champion again. Xanthi and won the promotion to the Third National Amateur, participating for the first time in a national championship. [10]
