Historical data
Moroni was named after the Byzantine surname Moroni [1] It is mentioned in a contract of 1382 [2].
In 1583 it is referred to as "Moroni Catto" with 120 inhabitants and "Moroni Apano" with 49 inhabitants.
During the Turkish occupation it was inhabited exclusively by Turks, in 1834 by 30 families and in 1881 by 287 Turks.
Settlements that no longer exist
The settlement of Paliama is mentioned in 1583 Pagliama with 6 inhabitants (Kastrofylakas, K 103) and in all other censuses until 1928 with 37 inhabitants.
To the southwest of the village of Moroni, at a distance of 1 km, the ruins of the settlement of Fradio are preserved. The settlement does not refer to old censuses, not even in 1881 but to the municipality of Ampelouzos in 1900 with 330 inhabitants (Nouchaki, Geography, 126). It seems that Fradio was abandoned a few decades ago.
