Administrative Region : South Aegean
Regional unit : Naxos
Moni (Μονή) Naxos
Moni is a village in the central mountainous Naxos at an altitude of 450-470 meters, with 216 inhabitants (2011 census). [1] Administratively, it belongs to the municipality of Naxos and the Small Cyclades of the Regional Unit of Naxos of the South Aegean Region (according to the Kallikratis Plan).
It used to belong to the former province of Naxos in the prefecture of Cyclades. From 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it was the seat of the community of the municipality of Drymalia. As of January 1, 2011, it is the same seat of the homonymous local community, the municipal unit of Drymalia, the Municipality of Naxos and the Small Cyclades.
It is located in the center of the island, east of the village of Kynidaros, west of Apeiranthos, south of Keramoti and north of Tragaia, built on a slope and at an altitude of about 600 m., With unobstructed views of the Tragaia basin.
To the left of Moni, going up from Chalki, is the mountain "Profitis Ilias" and to the right the mountain "Fanari". The name of the village comes from the Byzantine monastery that exists in the area and now a Byzantine church of Panagia "Drosiani". Moni of Panagia Drosiani, while it was known from the very old years, was highlighted by the archeological works that took place and lasted several years, in the 1970s. It is of Byzantine style and dates from the 4th to the 6th century. In the village there is and it is worth visiting the visitor, the "well" where the community laundries are kept in very good condition. There is an elementary school and the holy temple of the village is dedicated to Agia Fotini. The inhabitants of the village are called "Moniates and Moniatisses" and amount to about 300, while during the summer months they increase greatly with the vacationers.
The people of Moni were one of the best "craftsmen" of stone processing and due to the fertile soil and the many waters of the area they cultivate in the baxedes (the so-called "middle islands", because they are in the middle of the island) the best vegetables of the island. The Moniatisses are the best loom weavers and in the village there is and operates the weavers' association of Naxos Monastery. The agricultural products produced are of exceptional quality (potatoes, tomatoes, oil, herbs, etc.) as well as livestock products (cheese and meat).
Moni is located on the main road axis Naxos (Chora) - Chalki - Monastery - Stavros - Koronos - Skado - Komiaki - Apollon.
It has been a traditional settlement since 1988. [2] [3]

Administrative changes
In 1835, the settlement called Moni has 146 inhabitants (45 families) and is annexed to the newly established Municipality of Tragaia in the province of Naxos, based in the settlement of Chalkio. [18] [19]
In 1912, it was decided that the settlements, which had more than 300 inhabitants and a primary school, would become independent communities. Thus, the settlement of Moni is detached from the municipality of Tragaia, which is abolished and the community of Moni is established with its seat in Moni. [20]
In 1997, with the implementation of the Kapodistrias program (law 2539/97), the community of Moni was abolished and the settlement of Moni was annexed to the newly established municipality of Drymalia, based in the settlement of Chalkeio. [21] Specifically, with the Kapodistrias program, it belonged to the Municipal Department of Moni, of the Municipality of Drymalia, of the prefecture of Cyclades, to the geographical department of the Aegean Islands. [17]
In 2010, with the implementation of the Kallikratis program (law 3852/2010), the municipality of Drymalia was abolished and Moni was annexed to the newly established municipality of Naxos & Small Cyclades. [22]
Today, after the last change of 2010 (Kallikratis program), it constitutes together with the settlement of Sifones (which, however, has not had permanent residents since 1981) the Local Community of Moni (216 k.). The so-called Moni belongs to the municipal unit of Drymalia, the municipality of Naxos and the Small Cyclades, the regional unit of Naxos (the former prefecture of Cyclades), in the region of South Aegean.
