Mitrousi (Μητρούσι) Serres
Mitrousi is a village in the Regional Unit of Serres. The old name of the village was Homondos. It received its new name in honor of the Macedonian warrior Dimitrios "Mitrousi" Gogolakis who died fighting the Turks in the bell tower of the holy temple of Evangelistria in Serres.
Today it is a settlement inhabited by residents of the old settlement and the refugees who came to the area in 1925. The two settlements are separated by the drainage moat "Belitsa". "Kato Mitrousi" is the name of the oldest settlement and "Ano Mitrousi" is the newest. After the "Kapodistrian" law, on the amalgamation of communities in municipalities, the whole settlement belonged to the Municipality of "K. Mitrousiou" (Captain Mitrousi) based in Provatas, Serres. Today, Mitrousi belongs to the Municipality of Serres.
Historical data
History - Refugees
Kato Mitrousi is an old settlement. Ano Mitrousi was first inhabited by refugees from Eastern Thrace, residents of the villages of Soufli, Kioupli, Douvantzili, Alepli, Antanderli, Petra, Genna, Asbouga and others. in 1923. The first houses were built of wild watercress or of latticework with rods and mud coating. The roof was sloping with sashes (a type of reed used to make mats, papyri). In 1925 most families settled in houses of settlement.
Position
It is located southwest of the city of Serres at a distance of 11 kilometers and specifically 2 kilometers from the national road Serres-Thessaloniki. To the west of the village passes "Belitsa" - which ends in Strymon - a drainage ditch that helps in irrigation and flood prevention.
Extension - Crops
The area of the Mitrousiou farm is 25,108 acres and is distributed as follows:
21,158 acres of arable land, of which 14,253 acres are irrigated
690 acres of pastures, and
3260 acres of the settlement and other barren lands
The ground is flat. The soils are fed by artesian wells with a sufficient amount of iron. It has an altitude of 18m. above sea level and humid climate. The inhabitants were mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. They produced barley, wheat, maize, cotton, rice, sugar beet and alfalfa (clover).
Today, all lands are irrigated by the river Strymon. Cultures have not changed much with the difference that wheat and barley are cultivated less because the income they produce is small. Apart from agriculture and animal husbandry, which are the main occupations, the residents are also employed in the clothing factories that exist in the village, but also many of the residents are employees who work in the city of Serres while living in the village.
