Metaxada (Μεταξάδα) Messinia

Metaxada, [4] formerly referred to as Sambriki, is a mountainous settlement near Chora and is administratively part of the Municipality of Pylos - Nestoros, in the Prefecture of Messinia.

Location

Metaxada is located about 10 km northeast of Chora. It has an altitude of 538 [1] [5] meters and is about 25 kilometers off the coast of the Ionian Sea. Near Metaxada to the south are Stylianos and Metamorfosi, at distances of about 4 and 7 kilometers respectively and to the southeast of Maniaki at a distance of about 8 kilometers.
History

The village has a long history that follows the history of Messinia and the wider region of both Pylia and Trifylia. The area of the settlement, in antiquity, was part of the kingdom of Nestor, the ancient Pylos. The current settlement of Metaxada (formerly Sapriki) was one of the largest silk production centers in Messinia and there it owes its most probable and modern name. According to local tradition, the oldest name, respectively, of the village of Skarmiga or Skarmiga (now Metamorfosi) probably comes from the Chinese word "Skarminex", which means "Silk Road". The silk was then transported through the carriageway, which passed through these villages, to the port of Pylos for export and / or further processing. The trip from Sapriki - Port of Pylos with loaded horses and mules, lasted about 8 hours. Silk carriers departed from Sapriki in the afternoon, usually stopping at Scarmiga for overnight stays and continuing their journey to Pylos in the morning. [6]

Second Venetian rule

Main entries: Navarino Territory, Methoni Territory and Arcadia Territory

During the Second Venetian occupation, two separate villages were mentioned in the wider area. One village was referred to as Metaxada (Metaxada [7]) or Ano Metaxada (Metaxada alta [8]) and the other village as Sapricki or Saprich (9] or Saprich [7]). The two settlements are also mentioned in various censuses. Venetian Providers of the Most Peaceful Republic of Venice, which took place during the thirty years (1683 / 84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese, through their acquisition (Stato da Mar), also known as the Kingdom of Morea (1688-1715). The village of Metaxada, in 1689, belonged to the province of Navarino (Territorio di Navarin), while the village of Saprichi (Saprichi) belonged to the province of Arcadia or Arcadia (Territorio di Arcaadia). These provinces were the two of the 4 provinces in which the Methoni district was then divided (Fanari province, Arkadia province, Navarinou province and Methoni province). Based on the Venetian Corner census of 1689, the village of Metaxada had 17 inhabitants and the village of Saprikiki had 90 inhabitants respectively. [7] The village of Ano Metaxada (Metaxada alta) is said to have belonged, after 1700, to the province of Methoni (Territorio di Modon). [8] The village of Sapriki was referred to as Sairiki or Sairiki during the Recording of Ecclesiastical Property in 1699, as Saprichi, in the Grimani census of 1700 and also as Saprichi in the Pacifico / Alberghetti census of 1704. [10]

Newer story

The village was also referred to in the 19th century as Sapriki according to Pouqueville in 1815, but also according to the 1829 census conducted by the "Mission scientifique de Morée", part of the French mission called Campaign of Moria (Expédition de Morée), which was the expeditionary force of 13,000-15,000 men, under the command of Nicholas - Joseph Maison in the Peloponnese, between 1828 and 1833. [10]

Administrative history

Sabriki [11] was annexed, in 1835, [12] to the old Municipality of Flesiados or Flesiados [13], initially based in the settlement of Paidemenen (now Flesiada) and a little later, in 1840, [14] the settlement of Ligoudista (today the Chora), where it remained until 1912 when this municipality was abolished. The village is mentioned, in 1853, also as Sabriki in the second volume of "Ellinika" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis, as a village of the Municipality of Flesiados of the Province of Trifylia with a population of 174 inhabitants, based on the census of 1851. [15] The seat of the Municipality of Flesiados at that time, based on the same source, was the town of Ligoudista. The village from 1835 to 1879 was officially referred to as Sabriki, while from 1879 to 1889 it was referred to as Sappriki. From 1889 to 1896 it was referred to as Saprickion and from 1896 to 1907 as Sapricki. In 1899 the village, like the Municipality of Flesiados, was transferred from the Prefecture of Messinia and belonged to the Prefecture of Trifylia, [16] for about a decade, until 1909, when it returned to the Prefecture of Messinia, [17] as a settlement of the Province of Trifylia. From 1907 to 1927 the village was again referred to as Sabriki. In 1912, Sabriki was annexed to the Community of Sabrik. [18] [19] The settlements of Potamia and Veristia (the Cross) were also annexed to the same community. In 1927 [20] the Community of Sampriki and Sabriki were renamed the Community of Metaxada and Metaxada respectively. The village remained the seat of the Community of Metaxada, with the change of name, from 1912 to 1997, when then, in the context of the changes that occurred in the local government, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, Metaxada was subordinated to the abolished Municipality of Nestoros. [21] [22] until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, Metaxada now belongs to the new Municipality of Pylos - Nestoros. [23] [24] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program with the amalgamation of the pre-existing municipalities of Koroni, Methoni, Papaflessa, Pylos, Nestoros and Chiliochoria. Metaxada today is the seat of the Local Community of Metaxada of the Municipality of Pylos-Nestoros, [4] which includes the settlements of Potamia and Stavros), both of which today, based on the 2011 census, are without permanent residents. .

Residents

The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 109 permanent residents, who are mainly employed in various agricultural tasks.
