Lefkonas (formerly known as Popli [1]) is a village in the prefecture of Florina. It belongs to the Municipality of Prespa and is 42 km from Florina. The village is built at an altitude of 880m. It is inhabited by about 150 people all year round, engaged in the cultivation of beans, livestock and fishing. The largest percentage of the inhabitants are refugees from the Pontus. Clay pipes and a jar whose dating is not mentioned were found in the specific village.
On July 26, 1903, 70 Ottoman soldiers took refuge in the village, being chased by Kotas' body from Roulia and fortified in 18 Muslim houses. There they defended themselves with the help of their inhabitants, several of whom were vassals. A few days later, with the help of military reinforcements, the Muslims of the village took refuge in Nakolec. Then Kota's group was looted and their houses burned. A few days later, the army retaliates and burns down Christian houses in Lefkonas (Popli). South of the village of Lefkonas, fighters of SAGA (School of Officers of the General Headquarters of the DSE) built an airport. A 25-pound anti-aircraft gun was placed there to guard it.
Just 3 km outside the village we find the Kriovrisi bridge, while the village leaks from the Lefkonos stream, along which there are four bridges. The peak "Mazi" and the hills "Kale" and "Goritsa" offer a nice view of the area of Little Prespa with its islands. Here is the pumping station of the Prespa irrigation network, which irrigates 10,000 acres. beans. A mixed oak and beech forest surrounds the village. A festival takes place on 10/26. Inside the village are the churches of Ag. Andreas (1936), of St. Dimitriou and Prof. Elijah. Lefkonas (Popli) office in Florina, became a mixed settlement of natives and refugees. By 1926, 41 refugee families (129 people) had settled [EAP].
Piopli, a mixed settlement of Muslims and Christians, 40 Muslim families (270 people) have left and 41 refugee families have come from Asia Minor.
Most of the refugees who came spoke Pontic! Lefkonas (Pople) Florina, 310 people (144 males and 166 females), 1 of whom 22 were refugees who came after 1922 (55 males and 67 females). There were 289 expatriates, 17 expatriates and 4 foreigners [Census 1928].
