Ladochori (Λαδοχώρι) Thesprotia
Ladochori is an almost seaside village in the prefecture of Thesprotia, in the former province of Thyamida. It is located south of Igoumenitsa and has a primary school. According to the latest administrative division (Kallikratis Plan), it is the seat of a local community, the municipal unit of Igoumenitsa. According to the 2011 census, its population is 867 permanent residents.
Today Ladochori is a suburb of the city of Igoumenitsa (as its 1st urban unit), on the sea front of which is part of the new port of the city and many of its services.
Ecclesiastically, it belongs to the Diocese of Paramythia, Filiates, Giromeri and Parga. The church of the settlement is dedicated to Agios Georgios.
Historical data
During the imperial period (1st-3rd century AD), the existence of a Roman settlement is evidenced in a rift of Mount Zoumbri, which rises northeast of today's Ladochori, next to the stream that crosses the village. Its inhabitants would be engaged in fishing and animal husbandry, while they would also exploit a part of the plain that stretches between Ladochori, Igoumenitsa and Graikochori. The particular development of olive growing in recent years, as evidenced by the name of the village, was possibly timeless and could be traced back to the imperial period. [1] The excavations that have taken place in recent years in the area of Ladochori have brought to light parts of the road network of the settlement and floor plans of houses and shops. The most important find of the excavations is the "Roman mansion". It is a rectangular building with rooms and various workshops. To its west was a burial chamber with three sarcophagi of the 2nd century BC.
