Kounavoi (Κουνάβοι) Heraklion

Kounavoi is a village and former community in the province of Pediada, 15 km from Heraklion, the capital of the homonymous prefecture of Crete. It is located in the Minoan city of Eltynia. in a small valley, south of the hill Raki Rachi (alt. 336 m.). It belongs to the municipality of Archanes Asterousia. According to the 2001 Greek census, it had a population of 857. The inhabitants are engaged in olive growing and viticulture. Raisins, table grapes and oil are produced. Among other things, there is a Primary School and a kindergarten in the village. Inside the village there are three holy temples: the three-aisled Byzantine church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, Agios Nikolaos and Agios Dimitrios, Agios Georgios (or Apochalikias) and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Of the aforementioned temples, the three-aisled was built by five unmarried sisters, according to tradition. Each built them from a dome. The remains of building materials (pebbles) were used to build the church of Agios Georgios. About 300 m from the settlement in a location in vineyards is the church of Agios Panteleimon, which celebrates on July 27.

Historical data
Archeology

In the place of Zagouras, large buildings have been found with deconstructed stonework, where shells dating from the Greek era were found. Near the now uninhabited settlement of Zagourianos, buildings and capitals of Doric style were discovered in 1918 during road construction works, as well as an inscribed plaque of the 6th century BC. with letters bustrofidon, a piece of law for the houses, which belongs to the Great Inscription of Gortyna. From the latter it is confirmed that in the place of the present settlement was the ancient city of Eltyna or Eltynaia [1]. In the place of Skanderbeg were found clay votive plaques with a relief depicting a cavalry warrior paying a dragon and strongly reminiscent of St. George. It dates from the Hellenistic years [2].
Censuses

The settlement is listed in 1212 Scovavi and Cunavo [3]. Barozzi rightly mentions him as Cunavus, while in 1583 in the census of Kastrofylakas [4] Cunagus is mentioned with 205 inhabitants. In a contract of 1271 we find the name Conave [5].

When the Kounavoi were a community, the settlement of Komes, to the southeast of the village, at an altitude of 370 m, was also included in it. In K94 of Kastrofylakas, Comes is mentioned with 82 inhabitants in 1583. Another settlement, now uninhabited, which belonged to the Kounavon community, was the Zagourianos, at an altitude of 350 m. During the Venetian occupation, it was a larger settlement than the Kounavos. At the end of the 16th century it had 284 inhabitants and the name Gaidurianus. In all these settlements during the Turkish occupation, the inhabitants were mainly Turks.
