Korfes (Κορφαί) Heraklion<

Korfes is a village in the province of Malevizi, with 616 inhabitants during the 2001 census. It is a homonymous municipal district of the Municipality of Krousonas with one settlement. It is located 19.8 km from the road to Krousona. It is built on hills and that is why it was named Korfes.

To the east of the village there is an artesian well, the water of which rises one meter above the ground and emits the scent of sulfur. According to the residents, the sulfur water of the spring has healing properties, especially for skin diseases. Ruins from special baths built by the Turks are preserved.

In the village there is a beautiful square (in the center) near the temples of the Holy Trinity and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a 16th century building. The main occupation of the inhabitants is viticulture and olive growing. Raisins and oil are produced. There is a regional doctor's office, a kindergarten and a primary school.

Its oak has been declared a protected natural monument [2]. It is a perennial oak with a special botanical value associated with historical events in the area [3].

Historical data

The village is mentioned in the Venetian censuses from the 12th century onwards. Thus, in a document of 1248 it is found under the name Corfe. It then belonged to the Latin Archdiocese (S. Borsari, II Dominio Veneziano a Creta, p. 15). In 1369 Cotfe is also mentioned in the Western Archive of Hadaka and in 1399 as Cotfe.

In 1583, Corfes was inscribed in Kastrofylakas, with 130 inhabitants (Kastrofylakas, K 102). The Turkish census of 1671 lists Cotfes with 43 engravings (N. Stavrinidis). In the Egyptian census of 1834 the village is written Corufes and in 1881 as Korfais in the Municipality of Malevizi.

On August 1, 1905, during the Therissos revolution, a clash took place between British detachments and Cretan rebel forces occupying the Korfes, who were eventually forced to evacuate the settlement.
