Korakades is an old village in South Corfu [2], which is located on a hill and more specifically 121 meters [3] above sea level. They belonged to the Local Department of Petritis, of the former Municipality of Korissia of the Prefecture of Corfu.
History
As a settlement, it has its starting point in time. The Korakades are recorded in a Government Gazette (Government Gazette) from the year 1652, while in the census of 1684 36 families are listed. About two centuries later, in 1864, 140 inhabitants were counted, of which 79 males and 61 females. In the year 1866 they are included in the Municipality of Korissia which is founded according to the NW. of 8-5-1866 (Government Gazette 9 / 28-1-1866), based in the village "Argyrades" [4]. In the census of 1907, there is a significant increase in the population of Korakades, 340 inhabitants (177 males and 163 females). According to local tradition, it is rumored that the first inhabitants were Saracen pirates. Due to the piracy that prevailed in those times (incorrect date), security was provided only by hills that had good visibility to the sea but at the same time difficult accessibility. Based on these criteria, the former pirates chose this location, judging it safe and "eliminating" the pirate status, they engaged in fishing. The name of the village came from the crows that built their nests on this hill. The hill is located above the bays of Boukari and Petritis.
The "desolation"
About 40 years ago, due to some severe landslides, the inhabitants of Korakades were forced to look for a new place to live. The then government moved the village to a safer place, the current settlement of Petriti. Expropriating large areas of the settlement (property of an old manorial family of Palatians [5]), he distributed them to the families of the inhabitants of the village of Korakades, thus ensuring their safe transportation. The modern street plan of the new settlement is obvious and the result of hard work of the "Korakadites", who were occupied by the toil.
Korakades today
Having all been transferred to the modern coastal village of Petriti, some chose not to leave their homes and despite the landslides that took place, they remained in Korakades until today. In recent years, there have been some reconstructions in the village as well as houses being rebuilt in the area.
