Kerasitsa is a settlement in the prefecture of Arcadia in the Peloponnese. It is built in the plain of Tegea at an altitude of 691 meters and is located 10 km south of the capital of the prefecture, Tripoli. [1] According to the 2011 census, its population is 317 permanent residents, [2] who are mainly engaged in agricultural work and trade. [1]
General and historical data
During the Turkish occupation, Kerasitsa was a free village and not a tsifliki. [3] After independence, many families left it to settle in the Kallians of mountainous Corinth, [4] while in 1851, according to statistics available to Iakovos Rizos Ragavis, its population was 321 (69 families). engaged in agriculture. [5] In the following years, despite its proximity to Tripoli, Kerasitsa was isolated until 1888, the year the construction of the Tripoli-Sparta road began, which gave impetus to the social and economic life of the village. [6] Later, in 1928, it appears to have a population of 545 inhabitants and a primary school, [7] while in 1998 a traditional settlement was declared (along with other villages in the wider area). [8]
Road of the village
Administratively, in 1835 it was annexed to the municipality of Tegea, where it remained until 1912, when it was declared the seat of a community in the province of Mantineia. In 1997 it became part of the Kapodistrian municipality of Tegea, while from 2011 it belongs to the municipality of Tripoli. [2]
Politicians Grigoris Lambrakis and Theodoros Lambrakis (brother of the former) and the poet Mitsos Katsinis (1918 - 2000) were born in Kerasitsa. [9] [10]
