Kerasia is a municipal district of the Municipality of Paliani in the prefecture of Heraklion in Crete. It is located in the province of Malevizi at an altitude of 340 m. And at a distance of 19 km from Heraklion, and has a population of 366 people (approx. 2001). It consists of the settlements of Kerasia (population 243) and New Venerato (population 123). It is built on the slopes of the hill "Halepa" on its eastern side. It overlooks the Kerasanos plain, the Lassithi mountains, the historic Holy Monastery of Paliani and the hill "Kastellos", which at the top dominates the church of Agios Panteleimon. The new national road Heraklion-Messara passes through the lower part of the village.
Its inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture (sultanas, vineyards, olive trees, orchards with fruit trees) and less in animal husbandry. This settlement itself has a satisfactory number of visitors from local and foreign visitors.
Designation
Its normal name is Kerassa (from the verb "kerno") which came from the habit of its inhabitants to anoint foreigners, even by force. There is also the relevant mantinada of the area: I went to Avgeniki, a raisin, a raki, I also went to Venerato surta sourta sourta down, I also went to Kerassa and they treated me all day.
Historical data
The village is also mentioned in older censuses with the older one of Basilicata from the 13th century.
Formerly it was the seat of the Agricultural Municipality and the seat of the homonymous Community. In the Municipality of Paliani (formerly Tetrachori) it was compulsorily included in 1999 with the law "Kapodistria".
Sights
The chapel of Panagia Faneromeni, a landscape of special natural beauty, the chapel of Agios Silas, a ruined church of the first Christian years. Other churches are that of St. Georgiou in the center of the village and the parish church of Zoodochou Pigi, at the highest point of the settlement.
The restored building of the former Primary School, in the precinct of which there is also the tomb of Captain Charalambos Vlachakis who acted against the Ottomans.
Kyparissi hill and Halepa hill, overlooking the island of Dia.
Kerasanos gorge, which extends North of the village in the direction of A-D. It is crossed by the river (torrent) Diakoniaris.
In the village there is a local festival on July 30, the feast of Agios Silas.
