Kato Tarsos (Κάτω Ταρσός) Korinthia

Kato Tarsos is a mountain village in the prefecture of Corinth. It belongs administratively to the municipality of Sikyonia and according to the 2011 census its population amounts to 13 permanent residents [1].

General elements

It is built about 100 km west of Corinth [2] at an altitude of 1040 meters on the slopes of Kyllini and is one of the most mountainous settlements in Greece. Its inhabitants have traditionally been mainly engaged in animal husbandry and to a lesser extent in agriculture [3], while in recent decades the tourism sector has been on the rise. Important attractions in the area are the monastery of Panagia tou Vrachou [4] and the Byzantine church of the Holy Brigadiers [5].
Historical data

Kato Tarsos - like the neighboring Ano Tarsos - was probably founded in the 17th century on the ruins of the Byzantine city of Tarsus in the north of the plain of Feneos. It even refers to the 1700 spelling recorded by the Venetian envoy Grimani as Tarso Romeico. At the beginning of the 19th century, the inhabitants of Tarsus were distinguished as capable builders.

Administratively it was in 1834 together with Ano Tarsos part of the homonymous municipality [8] but in 1845 it was annexed to the municipality of Feneos [9] where it remained until the year 1912. Then it was subject until 1997 in the province of Corinth and was the seat of a community Ano Tarsos [10], while later it was annexed to the Kapodistrian municipality of Feneos. Since 2011 it belongs to the municipality of Sikyonia [11].
