Kalloni or Skillous is a village in the province of Pediada in the prefecture of Heraklion with 278 inhabitants during the 2001 census. It is also one of the villages (with the law Kapodistrias municipal district) of the Municipality of Nikos Kazantzakis in the prefecture of Heraklion, Crete. The inhabitants are engaged in olive growing and viticulture. Raisins are also produced. Within the village there is a winery of the "Union of Pedestrians" and a handicraft of iron constructions. There is a Primary School.
Historical data
The village is mentioned in contracts of 1271 under the name Sikillu. In 1278 it is referred to as in casali Sichylu.
In 1583 he refers to Kastrofylakas as Schilús with 273 inhabitants (Kastrofylakas K95). The Patriarch of Alexandria, Gerasimos II Palladas, came from the village itself and even mentions it in his will: "I am leaving my property in the village of Skilloundi". The Turks also respected the name of the village and mention it Iskilus (Chronicles A 93). The name of the village itself is related to Skillounta, the city of Xenophon in Trifylia, Peloponnese. The name comes from the worm, the well-known scallion, which is abundant in some places.
The village was renamed from Skylloi to Kalloni in 1926. [1]
Points of interest
To the east of the village there was the Monastery of Agia Fotini (Agia Fothia) from which only the three-aisled church is preserved, ruined by the remains of frescoes.
In the center of the village there is an old fountain with a double-headed eagle and a Turkish inscription, which was placed during the Turkish occupation by a Turk, who renovated the fountain.
In the northwestern part of the village at a distance of about 3 km are the ruins of a fortress. Francesco Bazilicata on his map notes in this place the village of the Plain Castel del Cornaro, which is mentioned in 1583 under this name and with 127 inhabitants (Kastrofylakas K 94).
