Kalentzi is a semi-mountainous village in the Corinth Regional Unit in the Peloponnese. [1]
Geography - Sights
Kalentzi is located in the center of the former prefecture of Corinth, about 21 km SW. from Corinth (via Assos), about 20 km N.-NA. from Kiato (via Vrachati) and 10 km N.-ND. from Zevgolatio (seat of the municipality). It is built at the northwestern foot of Mount Fokas or Foukas, also known as Apsas at an altitude of 320 meters. The only church in the village is Agios Konstantinos, however, just outside and north of the village there is the male Holy Monastery of Panagia Panton Haras. [2] At the top of the mountain there is the church of Panagia, which is in the rock, while, according to historians, a monk named Fokas lived there. The village is known for the good quality sultana it produces. In addition, the village produces oil as well as apricots. Together with Zevgolatio they constitute the municipal community of Zevgolatio that belongs to the municipal unit of Vochas of the municipality of Velos - Vochas, while according to the 2011 census it has 334 permanent residents. [3]
History
The village was first inhabited in 1920 by shepherds, who came down from Mount Kyllini (today's Ziria), with their animals, in order to overwinter. Historical sources state that the village was named after a shepherd named Kalentzis. The first inhabitants of the village, according to historical sources, had the surname Varvitsiotis. Today in the village you often come across this surname, as well as the surname Mitsopoulos, Tsatsaris and Magginas. These four names are also the majority of the village.
Remains of a large altar of ash have been found at the top of Fokas (altitude 862 meters), which is presumed to be that of Apesantios Zeus. The large number of pottery remains found dates back to the geometric period (4th century BC) and is an indication that it was an important place of worship. On the hill there are remnants of a medieval wall and settlement. as well as a castle that overlooked the plains of ancient Nemea and Vocha and was a visual link between the Acrocorinth and the fortresses of the region of Stymfalia and western Corinth. [4] [5] An ancient monument has been declared in the area since 1993. [6]
