Elafochori (Ελαφοχώρι) Kavala
Elafochori (until 1926 Karatzova [1]) is a mountain village in the municipality of Nestos in the regional unit of Kavala, in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 62 permanent residents. [2]
General and historical data
Elafochori is built at an altitude of 500 meters and is located northeast of Kavala [3], in the wider area of the Lekani mountain range [4].
At the beginning of the 20th century it was a Muslim village and was known as Karatza Ovasi. According to the statistics of the Greek army of 1911, it had 409 inhabitants. [5] After its annexation to Greece, it was called Karatzova, while in 1926 it received its current name.
After the exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey, 62 families of Greek refugees settled in Elafochori. [6] According to the 1928 census it had 234 inhabitants, and in the following censuses the course of the population is as follows: 1940: 174 k., 1951: 253 k., 1961: 213 k., 1971: 111 k., 1981: 140 k. ., 1991: 75 k. [3] In 1934, Elafochori was detached from the community of Makrychori and was designated the seat of the community of Elafochori, in the province of Nestos. With the Kapodistrias program, it joined the municipality of Orinou [7] and since 2011 it belongs to the Kallikratikos municipality of Nestos.
Samples of traditional architecture are preserved in the village. Unique in terms of the area of the former municipality of Orinos are the two-storey flat-fronted houses with loggias on the large side of the ground floor that are preserved in Elafochori. [8]
During the Bulgarian Occupation, Elafochori was destroyed by the Bulgarian army because it was the base of ELAS guerrillas, while its inhabitants were forced to evacuate it. [4] The Macedonian warrior Michael Paliouras came from the settlement. [9]
