Chionades (Χιονάδες) Evros
Chionades is a village in the municipality of Didymoteicho in the prefecture of Evros.
It is a settlement of indigenous inhabitants. The settlement existed in the area probably since 800 AD. Specifically, in the area of Axifaki, approximately 2.5 km east of the village, there are findings of an older settlement. The inhabitants of this settlement were forced, according to testimonies of older villagers, to move to the current location after two plague epidemics that killed a large part of the population. The first epidemic broke out at an unknown time today and the second around 1790.
Due to its location, but also due to the prevailing microclimate, it is often covered with snow in the winter months.
History
Until the liberation of Thrace in 1920, it was called "Karlikioi"[1][2]. Since 1924 it was a settlement of the Community of Trava, which in 1926 was renamed the Community of Elafochori, where it remained until 1999. From then until 2010 it was a settlement of the Municipal District of Elafochori of the Municipality of Metaxades. Today it belongs to the Municipality of Didymoteicho.
In the center of the village is the Church of Saint Athanasius, built in 1973 on the site of an older Church of the 19th century. The church celebrates on May 2, the collection of the relics of the Saint, and a festival is held in the village. At the southeastern edge of the village there is a chapel in honor of Saint Athanasius again. In this place there was the old cemetery of the village with an older chapel. Another chapel (of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary) is located near the recreation area on the "Tsigles" hill.
At the northwestern edge of the village is "Toumba", one of the many Thracian tumuli in the area (it is likely that this is a funerary monument). Today, Toumba is home to the aqueduct. On the main road of the village, there is also the marble "Kri Pigadi" from the early 19th century.
At the highest point of the village is the old stone-built Primary School, built in 1924. The building suffered major damage during the civil war and reopened in 1952.
A school-teaching center has been operating in Chionades since 1880. Specifically, on page 411 of the Code of the Metropolis of Didymoteicho 1880-1892, it is recorded that the Metropolitan of Didymoteicho from Smyrna, Methodios Aronis:
"...he erected from scratch and in the midst of indescribable illiteracy the following teaching centers and an equal number of schools, where they had never existed: 1) A new teaching center in the courtyard of the Virgin Mary following the burning of the pre-existing one 2) the teaching center of Tokmak (Metaxades) in 1880, 3) the schools and teaching centers of Impledin (Ladis) 1880, 4) Karli (Xionades) 1880, 5) Kioupli (Soufli) 1881, 6) Asvestades 1883 7) Petrades 1884, 8) Saltik (Lavaron) 1887, 9) Skourtochori 1888, 10) Paliouri 1889.....»
Folklore
The Beautification Cultural Association is also active in Chionades, which was founded in March 2000 by 79 Chionades residents, while today it has approximately 85 members. It organizes cultural events, such as the village festival on May 2 and the meeting of Chionades residents from all over the world every summer. It also revives customs such as Bey's, Christmas, New Year's and Lazarus Carols, participates in various events of other associations in the region, organizes informative talks and excursions to various parts of Greece. The activities of the Association also include the collection and preservation of traditional costumes and the construction of new ones in the same style, as well as the creation of a collection of folklore objects and photographic material from various moments in the past of the inhabitants of Chionades.
