Amfithea (Αμφιθέα) Messinia

Amfithea, [4] formerly referred to as Vromovrisi, is a settlement near Androusa and belongs administratively to the Municipality of Messina, in the regional unit of Messinia.

Location

Amfithea is located southeast of Androusa from which it is about 4 km. It has an altitude of 55 [1] [5] meters and is about 14 kilometers from the shores of the Gulf of Messinia. Near Amfithea are located, to the north Agrilia at a distance of about 900 meters, to the east Triodos at a distance of about 1.5 kilometers and to the southwest Koukkorrachi (old abandoned settlement, administratively integrated in Amfithea) at a distance of about 500 meters respectively. Also, Amfithea is located northwest of the seat of the municipality, Messina, from which it is about 8 kilometers away.

History

The village has a long history that follows the history of Messinia and the wider region of both Messina in modern times and Androusa in the medieval era. The village has existed, at least since the years of Venetian rule, and its oldest name was Vromovrisi or Vromovrisis.

Second Venetian rule

Main entry: Androussa Territory

At the time of the Second Venetian occupation it was referred to as Vromovrissi (6). The settlement also refers to various censuses of the Venetian Providers of the Most Peaceful Republic of Venice, which were made during the period of thirty years (1683 / 84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese.

The village, at the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, is mentioned in various Venetian sources-inventories, as a settlement which belonged to the province of Androusa (Territorio d'Androussa).

Recent history

In the 19th century it was referred to as Vromovryssi according to Pouqueville, in 1815, who mentions the village in the list of villages of the Province of Androusa (French: Éparchie d'Androusa), which depended on the episcopal see established on the Island. (Nisi: Messina). [7] It is also referred to as Vromovrysi, but as a settlement of the λακparchie d'Emblakika Province (French: Éparchie d'Emblakika), inhabited by 34 families, [8] according to the 1829 census conducted by the "scientific mission of Moria" ( Mission scientifique de Morée), part of the French expedition called Expédition de Morée, which was a expeditionary force of 13,000-15,000 men, under the command of Nicholas - Joseph Maison in the Peloponnese, between 1833 and 1832 , while the first official name of the village, after the founding of the modern Greek state, was with the name Vromovrysis.
Administrative history

Vromovrissis or Vromovrissi [9] was originally annexed in 1835, [10] to the Municipality of Trikki, [11] based in Karteroli, until 1840, [12] when this municipality was abolished and the settlement annexed to the Municipality of Eva [ 13] based in Naziri (today Eva), where it remained until 1912 when this municipality was abolished. At least from 1844 to 1879 the village was officially referred to as Vromovrissis and from 1879 to 1907 as Vromovrisi. From 1907 to 1928 it was referred to as Bromovrisi and then again, from 1928 to 1940, as Bromovrisi. From 1940 to 1957, it was referred to as Bromovrisi, while from 1957, when it was renamed, it is still referred to as Amfithea. The village is mentioned, in 1853, as Vromovrisis in the second volume of "Ellinikon" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis, as a village of the Municipality of Eva in the Province of Messina with a population of 348 inhabitants, based on the census of 1851. [14] In the same source, Naziri (today Eva) is mentioned as the seat of the Municipality of Eva. In 1867 [15] the seat of the Municipality of Eva was transferred from Naziri to Androusa. In 1912 [16] the village was annexed as a seat to the Community of Bromovrisi. [17] Also in 1912, the settlements of Misirli or Miserli (now Myrtopotamia), Koukokorrahi (abolished in 1981, annexed to Amfithea), Aidini (now Agrilia), Spitalia and Alitsselepi (today the Triodo) were annexed to the same community. In 1957 [18] the village and its community were renamed Amfithea and the Community of Amfithea respectively. Amfithea remained as the seat and settlement of the Community of Amfithea, with the changes in the names of the settlement and the community, from 1912 to 1997, when then, in the context of the changes that occurred in the local self-government, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, Amfithea was part of the abolished Municipality of Androusa, [19] [20] based in Androusa, until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, Amfithea now belongs to the new Municipality of Messina. [21] [22] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program with the merger of the pre-existing municipalities of Apeia, Androusa, Aristomenous, Voufradon, Ithomis, Messini, Petalidi and the Community of Trikorfo. Amfithea today is the seat and the only settlement of the Local Community of Amfithea of the Municipality of Messina. [4]

The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 380 permanent residents, who are mainly employed in various agricultural tasks.
