Historical data
Archaic tablets and figurines depicting an ancient goddess have been found in the area of the village. [1]
The etymology of the name is not known. Emmanuel Lambrinakis in his work Geography of Crete (1890) states that the name comes from Agios Monos. Nikolaos Stavrinidis considers the corruption of the name Agios Panteleimonas to be more likely to have originated, due to the presence of a homonymous church in the village. Stergios Spanakis states that it may have come from the adjective Aymo or Aymone, which is found in Venetian notarial deeds of the 14th century. [1]
The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Aimonos. In the Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas it is mentioned as Aimona with 202 inhabitants and Francesco Basilicata in 1630 as Aimonas. In the Ottoman census of 1671 it is referred to as Aymonos, with 38 excavations. [1] In 1881 it belonged to the municipality of Damasta and according to the census had 149 inhabitants, all Christians. In that census he is referred to as Aimonos. In the 1900 census it had 227 inhabitants and belonged to the same municipality. [1]
In 1925, Aimonas (referred to as Aeimonos) was designated the seat of the homonymous community, which was maintained until the Kapodistrian administrative division in 1997, when it became part of the municipality of Kouloukonas. [2]
