Afrati (Fluffy ) is a small traditional village in the regional unit of Heraklion, with 174 inhabitants in 2001. It is located in the province of Pediada and belongs to the Municipality of Viannos and is the seat of a homonymous municipal district. Its inhabitants are mainly engaged in olive growing and viticulture. In the village there are traditional houses, courtyards and small alleys. The central church is that of the Transfiguration of the Savior. There is an Primary School.

Designation

According to one version, the village owes its name to the fluffy soil of the area, which is located around the village. Another hypothesis wants the name to come from α + well = without water, lack of water.

According to another hypothesis, the name comes from Aphrodite, who was the worshiped goddess of the Arcadians, who is supposed to have built their city on the site of the present settlement. Probably the Arcadians were inhabited for the first time by inhabitants of today's Arcadia in the Peloponnese.

Another version says that it is probably related to the Latin frate, pl. frati = nuns "or with the surname Afratos.

Historical data

Near the village, on the hill of Profitis Ilias (at 668 m.) There was an ancient city, named Arcadia or Arkades. As an independent city it minted its own coins. In the first Christian years it became the seat of a Bishop. [1]. An ancient winemaker dating from the Oriental period has also been found in Afrati [2]. Archaeological excavations were carried out by the Italian Archaeological School and brought to light, among others, ancient houses and a necropolis dating to the 7th, 8th and 9th centuries BC. At the same time, the foundation of the ancient city of Arkades is placed by many archaeologists.

The village is not mentioned in any Venetian list of villages, nor in the Turkish census of 1671. The name Frati refers to the Turkish census of 1881.
