History

Nea Potamia was built in the 20th century by the inhabitants of an older village, called Potamia, and its ruins are preserved at the bottom of a steep valley, 1.3 km (straight line distance) northwest of today's village. The reason for the abandonment of the old village (also known today as "Old River") was its unhealthy microclimate, as the sun hardly saw it. For this reason, Nea Potamia is perhaps the only village in Chios with wide streets (8 meters wide) and a square road.

The idea to move the village has existed since 1955. Nea Potamia began to be built in 1961 and the last inhabitants left the old village in 1964. But also the old village came from a medieval settlement to Pirama, which was called Agios Georgios, with many oaks. Agios Georgios was visible from the sea, so it was an easy target for pirates and for this reason around 1600 the inhabitants moved to Palia Potamia. Palia Potamia, as its name suggests, was at the confluence of two small rivers, the largest of which was the Kourvoulos stream.

Today the village belongs ecclesiastically to the hierarchical committee of Volissos of the Holy Metropolis of Chios, Psara and Oinousses. The parish church (the "village church") of Nea Potamia is honored in the memory of Agioi Anargyroi, while that of Palia Potamia (17th century church) is commemorated in the memory of Agios Antonios.

From Nea Potamia comes Hara (Zacharoula) Karyami, an Olympian (bronze medal) with the rhythmic gymnastics team in the ensemble at the 2000 Olympic Games.
