Ο Larry Ellison συνίδρυσε την Oracle Corporation το 1977 με τον Bob Miner και τον Ed Oates με την επωνυμία Software Development Laboratories (SDL).[2] Ο Ellison εμπνεύστηκε[8] από το έγγραφο του 1970 που γράφτηκε από τον Edgar F. Codd σχετικά με τα σχεσιακά συστήματα διαχείρισης βάσεων δεδομένων (RDBMS) με το όνομα "A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Bank."[9] Άκουσε για τη βάση δεδομένων IBM System R από ένα άρθρο στο IBM Research Journal που παρέχεται από τον Oates. Ο Ellison ήθελε να κάνει το προϊόν της Oracle συμβατό με το System R, αλλά απέτυχε να το κάνει καθώς η IBM κράτησε μυστικούς τους κωδικούς σφαλμάτων για το DBMS της. Η συμμαχία κάλεσε ότι το Oracle Cloud και το Microsoft Azure θα συνδεθούν απευθείας, επιτρέποντας στους πελάτες του καθενός να αποθηκεύουν δεδομένα και στις δύο πλατφόρμες υπολογιστικού νέφους και να εκτελούν λογισμικό είτε στο Oracle είτε στο Azure. Στις 20 Δεκεμβρίου 2021, η Oracle ανακοίνωσε την εξαγορά της Cerner, μιας εταιρείας τεχνολογίας πληροφοριών υγείας.[21] Την επόμενη μέρα, στις 21 Δεκεμβρίου, η Oracle δημοσιοποίησε την εξαγορά της Federos, μιας εταιρείας τεχνητής νοημοσύνης και εργαλείων αυτοματισμού για απόδοση δικτύου.[22] Η εξαγορά της Cerner ολοκληρώθηκε τον Ιούνιο του 2022 έναντι 28,3 δισεκατομμυρίων δολαρίων σε μετρητά.[23]

On July 3, 2007, SAP admitted that TomorrowNow employees had made "inappropriate downloads" from the Oracle support web site. However, it claims that SAP personnel and SAP customers had no access to Oracle intellectual property via TomorrowNow. SAP's CEO Henning Kagermann stated that "Even a single inappropriate download is unacceptable from my perspective. We regret very much that this occurred."
