James Stefanou (born 15 April 1987) in Australia, is an Australian football (soccer) player who is currently playing for South Melbourne in the VPL.
Club career
James Stefanou started his career at South Melbourne back in the NSL in the reserves. Once the NSL became defunct he was one of the only few South Melbourne players from the NSL to stay with the club. He made his debut for the club in Round 15 of the 2005 VPL season coming on as an 79th minute substitute for George Tzirtis. [1]
In 2006 Stefanou became an important member of the senior squad and was lucky enough to be apart of the championship winning squad.
In 2007 Stefanou was loaned out to the newly promoted Western Suburbs where he was a vital part of their defence. He made 19 out of a possible 26 appearances before the season finished
In 2008 Stefanou left South Melbourne and signed for their arch rivals Heidelberg United FC In his first season with the club he played in 26 of 29 possible games and was a vital part of the defence but in the 2009 season Stefanou was unluckily ridiculed with injury and was only able to compete in a total of 10 games.
The next season Stefanou returned to South Melbourne[2] and has currently played in a total of 8 of 14 matches for South Melbourne. He also made his professional debut for the club when he started and played the full 90 minutes in South Melbourne's opening Singapore Cup match against Gombak United which finished in a 2-1 win.[3]
At the end of South Melbournes Singapore Campaigne James was released by the club.
He signed for Melbourne Knights in the following months.
