John Iliopoulos, with his son Alexander.
Greek physicist born 1940 in Kalamata, Greece. He did his Ph.D. at the École Normale Supérieure. In 1970, Sheldon Glashow, Iliopoulos, and Luciano Maiani recognized the critical importance of a fourth type of quark in the context of the Standard Model. A fourth quark allows a theory that has flavor -changing Z0-mediated weak interactions but no flavor -changing ones. In a 1974 summary talk for a conference, Iliopoulos presented, for the first time in a single report, the view of physics now called the Standard Model.
Iliopoulos and Maiani were jointly awarded the 1987 J. J. Sakurai prize for theoretical particle physics.
Iliopoulos is the first recipient of the foundation's Aristeio prize 2002, which has been instituted to recognize Greeks who have made significant contributions towards furthering their chosen fields of science. The award is accompanied by a sum of Euro150 000. The award is made by the Bodossaki Foundation, established in 1973 by Greek philanthropist Prodromos Athanassiadis, known as Bodossakis.
