Ignatios Antoniadis, is a CNRS research director, at the "Centre de physique théorique" [Center for theoretic physics] of the Ecole polytechnique. As from this year, he is a permanent member of the Theory Division of CERN in Geneva. His research has covered a vast area of theoretical physics of elementary particles, but he owes this silver medal especially to his work on the theory of supercords and to its phenomenological applications. This fascinating theory, which had already appeared in the seventies, postulates that the elementary components of matter are not point particles, but rather extended objects or "cords." Today, it offers the only hope of uniting the two great discoveries from the beginning of this century, namely general relativity and quantum mechanics. The work of the French team, in which Ignatios Antoniadis has played a very important role, concerns in particular the construction of theories of four-dimensional cords, and the possibility of testing them experimentally. The surprising consequences of these theories could lead to a modification in the gravitational forces over short distances, and even to the appearance of additional spatial dimensions on a microscopic scale.
