Peter Lax about Christodoulou
Demetrios (Dimitris) Christodoulou (Δημήτριος Χριστοδούλου), son of Mary and Lambros Christodoulou, is considered by many to be the preeminent contemporary thinker about Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Dimitris Christodoulou, a Greek American mathematical physicist, was born 19-10-1951 in Athens, Greece.
In September 1968 Christodoulou was admitted to Princeton’s graduate program in physics. His research explored the thermodynamics of black holes. He receives his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University in 1971 (Investigation in gravitational collapse and the physics of black holes) as a student of A. Wheeler. His first publication is “Reversible and irreversible transformations in black hole physics“, Phys. Rev. Letters, 25 (1970), pp. 1596-1597). In his thesis he shows that the area of a black hole is proportional to its entropy.

In 1978 collaboration with Choquet-Bruhat and Jean Leray in Paris. Publication in 1980-1981 of Solutions globales des equations de champ de Yang-Mill and Existence of global solutions of the Yang-Mills, Higgs and spinor fieldequations in 3+1 dimensions,
He continues studying the theorem of Picard Lindelöf of the uniqueness of solutions of differential equations and also differential geometry. Christodoulou worked with Field medal recipient Shing Tung Yau in the period 1981-1983. He discovered the so-called Christodoulou Memory Effect (or Christodoulou Permanent Displacement). It states that there is a permanent change, a “memory,” in the wave field from a gravitational wave burst.
With Sergiu Klainerman he published a monumental 514 page work entitled “The global non-linear stability of the Minkowski space” (Princeton Mathematical Series, 41, Princeton University Press 1993). In fundamental papers Christodoulou (1994, 1999) showed that naked singularities occur in the gravitational collapse of a scalar field. “Naked” singularities or points of infinite density that are formed when matter or field energy collapses, are hypothesized to exist within black holes, from which nothing can escape.
Humboldt fellow at the Max Planck Institute (1976-1981). During the period 1972-1976 he was a research fellow at Caltech, a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Athens, and a visiting scientist at CERN in Geneva and at ICTP in Trieste. A visiting member of the Courant Institute (1981-1983), associate professor (1983-1985) and professor of mathematics (1985-1987) at Syracuse University, professor of mathematics at the Courant Institute (1988-1992), and professor of mathematics at Princeton University (1992-2001), (2001-) professor of mathematics and physics at the ETH, Zürich in Switzerland.
Honorary degree citations from Brown University, 28-May 2001:
Master mathematician, preeminent physicist, you have boldly gone where no one has gone before. You have seen the universe in new and previously inexplicable ways. Called “the single most profound contemporary thinker about Einstein’s theory of general relativity,” you have stretched the boundaries of intellectual exploration. Your contributions to your chosen disciplines are unmatched and have earned you several of the most distinguished honors presented by the academy.
From the moment you received your doctorate at the age of nineteen to the present day, you have demonstrated the power of creative thinking and precise mathematical proofs, combined with physical and geometrical insight. Two of your best known discoveries created knowledge and solved problems that had vexed scientists for decades. The Christodoulou Memory Effect is a subtle consequence of Einstein’s theory of relativity that had evaded discovery until you brought your skills of mathematical analysis to bear on the problem. You also were the first to observe that, theoretically, matter and energy can collapse at a point of infinite density outside of a black hole. This phenomenon, called the naked singularity, was previously believed by the greatest minds in physics to be impossible to prove.
We salute you as a scholar who has pursued the intellectual enterprise with vigor and grace, and who has transformed our understanding of the fundamental structure of the universe.
