El Greco ("Der Grieche"), wirklicher Name: Domenikos Theotocopoulos (Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος / Ελ Γκρέκο) (* um 1541 in Phodele oder in Kandia (heute Heraklion) auf Kreta; † 7. April 1614 in Toledo) war ein Maler, Bildhauer und Architekt griechischer Herkunft und Hauptmeister des spanischen Manierismus bzw. der ausklingenden Renaissance.

Leben

Vor seiner Auswanderung aus Kreta wirkte El Greco als Ikonenmaler. In der byzantinischen Schule galt er als Meister seiner Kunst, wenn sich auch bereits in seiner kretischen Phase eine Verbindung von östlicher und westlicher Maltechnik anbahnte. El Greco arbeitete seit etwa 1565 im Atelier von Tizian in Venedig, ließ sich von der Malerei Jacopo Bassanos und Tintorettos beeinflussen, ging 1570 nach Rom und weilte seit 1577 in Toledo, wo er Aufträge vor allem für den spanischen Hofadel ausführte und eine große Werkstatt unterhielt.

Werke

Born in 1541, in either the village of Fodele or Candia (the Venetian name of Chandax, present day Heraklion) on Crete,[c] El Greco was descended from a prosperous urban family, which had probably been driven out of Chania to Candia after an uprising against the Venetians between 1526 and 1528.[4] El Greco's father, Geórgios Theotokópoulos (d. 1556), was a merchant and tax collector. Nothing is known about his mother or his first wife, also Greek.[5] El Greco's older brother, Manoússos Theotokópoulos (1531 – 13 December 1604), was a wealthy merchant and spent the last years of his life (1603–1604) in El Greco's Toledo home.[6]
