In Greek mythology, Mintho (also Menthe, Mentha, Minthe,Μένθη) was a nymph associated with the river Cocytus. She was the illict lover of Hades, the god of the underworld, until discovered by Demeter, mother of Hades' jealous wife Persephone. Persephone beat her so badly that she disintegrated; from her remains the goddess then created the mint plant.
