West Pediment of Asklepios Temple in Epidaurus

The west pediment depicts the battle between the Greeks and the Amazons before the walls of Troy
The figures are in a highly fragmentary state of preservation, but we may note in the centre the figure of a mounted Amazon, probably the Amazon queen Penthesilea, fighting two warriors (inv, no 136, 151m 158A, 4757. One of the warriors has been identified with Machaon, son of Asklepios, who fought at Troy.

The central group is flanked by pairs of fighting Amazons mounted or on foot (inv, no 138, 156
4646, 139, 140) and Greek warriors (inv. nos. 4562, 4753, 4650, 158A)
Slain Greeks have fallen to the ground in the corners (inv 4492, 4747) and a dead Amazon is still
on her horse (inv. no. 137)

The central akroterion of the pediment is a winged Nike descending from the sky, holding a partidge (inv, no 155) a symbol of Asklepios's healing powers. The side akroteria are two monted
Aurae or Nereids (inv. no 157, 157) All three akroteria were the work of the sculptor Timotheos
