The furniture at Akrotiri, Thera
Our knowledge of prehistoric Aegean furniure is limited, based until recently exclusively on miniature terracotta models of thrones, beds and tables and on a very small number of fresco representations.
Unfortunately the actual furnishing have not survived, since then, like today they were made of wood, a material whih perishes throughtime. This scant evidence is supplemental by the casts of wooden furniture from Akrotiri. The casts are exact copies of parts of furniture such as the back of a seat, or of complete pieces of furniture, such as the three circular tripod tables, four low stools and four undecorated beds, of which one preserved its lattice work cord netting. These casts were produced by pouring artist's plaster into the hollow left by the disintegrated object inside the presence of the layer of volcanic ash. These furnishings demonstrate the presence of specialized carpenters or furniture makers and reaffirm the high living standards of the inhabitants of Akrotiri.
