13644 (Γλ. 3886) Lemnian stele

Copyright ©. Photo : www.hellenicaworld.com

Depiction in low relief of a male figure facing left and
holding a spear. The two inscriptions on the front and side,
incised by different engravers, using Greek letters but written
in the Lemnian language, have not yet been interpreted.
The Lemnian language is attested in inscriptions written in the
Greek alphabet on Archaic vases from Lemnos, and is related to Etruscan.
The stele was found in 1884 in the ruins of the church of Agios Alexandros
at Kaminia on Lemnos and probably comes from the ancient cemetery nearby.
Late 6th c. B.C.
