Papaflessas (Παπαφλέσσας) Messinia

Papaflessas [4] also referred to as Ano Kontogoni or Pano Kontogoni and formerly as "Kontogoni", is a mountainous settlement near Vlachopoulos and is administratively part of the Municipality of Pylos - Nestoros, Messin Prefecture.

The village of Papaflessas originated in 1915 from the renaming of an older settlement, known until then as Kontogoni, which consisted of two smaller settlements: Ano Kontogoni (or Pano Kontogoni), now known as Papaflessas and Kato Kontogoni (or Kato Kontogoni), known today as Kontogoni. [5] The village of Papaflessas is usually referred to as Pano Kontogoni or Pano Papaflessas, to stand out from the nearby settlement of Kontogoni (officially: Kontogonion), which is also referred to as Kato Kontogoni or Kato Papaflessas and which was officially recognized as a settlement only in 1940.

Location

Papaflessas is located north of Vlachopoulos, about 10 kilometers northeast of Chora, about 15 kilometers. It has an altitude of 665 [1] [6] meters and is about 31 kilometers off the coast of the Ionian Sea. Near Papaflessas are, to the northwest of Paleo Loutro at a distance of about 5 km and to its south Kontogoni, at a distance of about 2 km.
History

The village, located at the foot of Mount Koufieros, in the semi-mountainous complex of Kontovounia, has a long history following the history of Messinia and the wider region of both Methoni and Pylia. The area of the settlement, in antiquity, was part of the kingdom of Nestor, the ancient Pylos. The village has existed, at least since the years of Venetian rule, and its oldest name was Kontogoni. The newest name was given to the village in honor of the fighter of the Revolution of 1821, clergyman and politician Papaflessa, who fell fighting during the Battle of Maniaki (May 20, 1825).

Second Venetian rule

Main entry: Territory of Methoni

During the Second Venetian occupation it was referred to as Codoguni (Codoguni [7] or Condagogni [8]). The settlement is also mentioned in various censuses of the Venetian Providers of the Most Peaceful Republic of Venice, which took place during the thirty years (1683 / 84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. The village of Codoguni, in 1689, belonged to the province of Methoni (Territorio di Modon), which was one of the four provinces then divided by the Methoni district (Fanari province, Arcadia province, Navarino province and province). Methoni). Based on the Venetian Corner census of 1689, the village had 30 inhabitants. [7] As there were two settlements, this reference first concerned the Lower Kontogoni [9] and then the sources mainly refer to the Upper Kontogoni. [9] Pano Kontogoni was referred to as Kontogoni during the Recording of Ecclesiastical Property (1699), as Condoqni, in the Grimani census of 1700 and as Condagoqni in the Pacifico / Alberghetti census of 1704. [9]
Newer story

The village was also referred to as Londoqoni according to the 1829 census conducted by the Mission scientifique de Morée, part of the French mission called Expédition de Morée, which was a mission. 13,000-15,000 men, under the leadership of Nikolaos - Joseph Maizonos in the Peloponnese, between 1828 and 1833, while the first official name of the village, after the founding of the modern Greek state, was the name Kontogoni. [9] There are also reports of the village as "of Kontogonis".

Administrative history

Kontogoni [10] was originally annexed in 1835, [11] to the old Municipality of Scarmigos, [12] based in Scarmiga (now Metamorfosi), until 1840, [13] when this municipality was abolished and the settlement detached. by the Municipality of Skarmigos and is annexed to the old Municipality of Voufrasos (later the Municipality of Voufrados), [14] where it remained until 1912 when the municipality was abolished. At least from 1844 to 1879 the village was officially referred to as "of Kontogoni" and from 1879 to 1915 as Kontogoni. The village is mentioned, in 1853, also as Kontogoni in the second volume of "Ellinika" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis, as a village of the Municipality of Voufrasos of the Province of Pylia with a population of 200 inhabitants, based on the census of 1851. [15] The seat of the Municipality of Voufrasou until 1851 was Hantzi (today Hatzis) and from 1851 to 1856 Vlachopoulos and then again Hatzis. According to the 1879 census, the settlements of Ano Kontogoni and Kato Kontogoni, which were then recorded together, had a total of 230 inhabitants. The settlements of Ano Kontogoni and Kato Kontogoni were mentioned separately until 1907, when they were administratively unified in a settlement mentioned later and until 1915, as far as Kontogoni. In 1912 [16] Kontogoni was annexed to the Community of Kontogoni. [17] In 1912, the settlements of Maniaki and Margeli were also annexed to the same community. In 1915 [18] the settlement of Kontogoni and the Community of Kontogoni were renamed Papaflessas and the Community of Papaflessa respectively. In 1940 [19] Kato Kontogoni was officially recognized as Kontogoni [20] and joined the Papaflessa Community. Papaflessas remained the seat of the Papaflessa Community, with the changes of community and settlement names, from 1912 to 1997, when, as part of the changes that took place in the local government, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, Papaflessas became subject to the abolition. Municipality of Papaflessa, [21] [22] until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, Papaflessas now belongs to the new Municipality of Pylos - Nestoros. [23] [24] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program with the amalgamation of the pre-existing municipalities of Koroni, Methoni, Papaflessa, Pylos, Nestoros and Chiliochoria.
