Palaiokastro is a village in the municipal unit of Skotoussi in the municipality of Heraklion in the prefecture of Serres. The old name of the village was Kula (in Turkish: Kale = Castle) and was renamed "Palaiokastron" at the end of 1926.

History

Near the villages of Palaiokastro and Vamvakofyto, the ruins of an ancient city have been located, which may be identified with the ancient Skotoussa, a city of Odomantiki. [1] According to ancient sources, the city was located between Sirra (Serres) and Heraklion Sintiki. It is speculated that the most likely location of Skotoussa is in Palaiokastro, as it is four Roman miles (6 km) from Heraklion and 18 miles from Sirra, as evidenced by Roman travel. [2] The population of the village consisted mainly of local Macedonians and Vlachs, while after 1920 both Pontians and Greeks from the southern coastal areas of Ukraine applied. Also, in 1945, the inhabitants of the village of Neraida, 2 km north of the Monastery of the Holy Cross, were transferred.

Economy

The main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture, with cultivation of cotton, corn, tobacco, wheat and olive trees. Then comes livestock and beekeeping. Formerly around '90, when the regional road connecting Promachonas-Sidirokastro-Serres had not yet been created, Palaiokastro was one of the parking centers for Greek-Bulgarian trucks, which favored the economy of the surrounding area, as it provided an opportunity to develop the fish market. the craft. Due to competition, only the Idea SA factory has survived to this day. The village has founded the Apollon Palaiokastrou team, which is located in the 2nd amateur, with a stadium which was funded by the then municipality of Skotoussi for the creation of stands, locker rooms and floodlights as well as for the financial support of the team.

Education

Palaiokastro has a three-seat Primary School and a Kindergarten. The primary school was built after World War II. It started as a two-seater with 20 students and rose to about 170 in the late 1960s. It took 2 additional rooms to attend classes, one of which was built at the school and the other was licensed with the approval of an individual for the hall of his residence. The primary school today is equipped with the necessary technological educational means and provides full coverage of the needs of its students.
The kindergarten is closed, and the children are now being cared for at the Skotoussa kindergarten.

Monastery of the Holy Cross

It was probably founded in 1880. It is located 5 km north of the village. The complex, a small one-room hall, survives today. It functions as a chapel and is named after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. To the west of the church are tombs of the founders' family. The monastery was the subject of a dispute between patriarchs and exarchs in the period 1903-1907. In 1907 an armed Bulgarian corps destroyed the complex and only the catholic escaped destruction. Today, every early September, the festival is held in honor of the Virgin Mary after Sidirokastro, Heraklion and Skotoussa.

The financing, amounting to 5 million euros, was approved, through NSRF, for the expansion of the Serres landfill. These are new cell drilling operations, covering an area of about 26 acres in the Fairy area and will have a "lifespan" of 3 to 3.5 years. The project includes landfill works, landfill seals, biogas management projects, drainage management projects, flood protection construction projects, cell infrastructure projects, as well as environmental monitoring projects. According to the Deputy Mayor for Cleanliness of the Municipality of Serres, Pantelis Chrapas, the approval of the financing is the result of a series of actions that have been taken in order to ensure for the citizens of Serrai a place where waste will be deposited, until at least the Palaiokastro landfill is completed. , which is currently operating on a trial basis and will run on a trial basis until September 2012.
