Palaiokastritsa, Corfu is a tourist village in northwestern Corfu that took its name from the neighboring Angelokastro of Corfu, the oldest castle on the island. Palaiokastritsa was a Municipal Community of the island of Corfu that contained the area around the homonymous village of Palaiokastritsa.
With the Municipal Reform of Kallikratis (2011) the Administrative Unit of Palaiokastritsa belongs to the enlarged Municipality of Corfu that includes the whole island. [1] According to the Greek census 2011, the Administrative Unit of Palaiokastritsa has an area of 48,379 km² and a population of 4,068 inhabitants, located on the west coast of Corfu south of Angelokastro. [2] The Administrative Unit of Palaiokastritsa is based in the village of Lakones, Corfu (584 inhabitants), contains the villages of Liapades, Corfu (879 inhabitants), Doukades, Corfu (247 inhabitants) and Skripero (500 inhabitants).
Historical data
Corfu was the mythical country of the Phaeacians described by Homer in the Odyssey, Odysseus met Nafsika when he ran aground in the bay of Palaiokastritsa. the then community of Laconia with Spyros Michalas as president in combination with the Scuba diving center, the Holy Monastery of Panagia Palaiokastritsa and the participation of local boatmen and other local organizations. In the first years, the event took place on July 13, a day of celebration of the small church, in the bay of Palaiokastritsa. In recent years it is held in the first week of August .. The first inhabitants of the village according to the tradition of the locals were Lacedaemonian travelers who on their way to Greater Greece fell into a storm, ran aground in the area and stayed permanently. Frequent pirate attacks and looting later forced residents to move more mountainously to the present-day village of Lakones.
Tourism
Palaiokastritsa has been - and continues to be - a very popular tourist destination, which attracts a lot of people every year. In the bay area of Palaiokastritsa you will find restaurants, snack bars, hotels, as well as beaches near the area. Following the provincial road leading out of the village, you will find many hotels, rooms to let, mini markets, swimming pools and rentals. cars and motorcycles, smaller beaches and paths leading to the village of Lakones. It is worth mentioning that the central beach of the gulf of Palaiokastritsa was awarded a blue flag, as well as the paths leading to the neighboring village have been deemed suitable for hiking.
