Ormos Athiniou (Όρμος Αθηνιού ) Santorini
Ormos Athiniou or Athinios is the port of Santorini. It is located 10 km south of Fira. Administratively, it belongs to the Local Department of Pyrgos Kallistis of the Municipality of Thira.
Athinios is one of the 16 ports included in the refugee port plan. [1] [2] Following the sinking of the cruise ship Sea Diamond, the process of abolishing this position as a port of refuge has begun. [3]
The prehistoric olive grove
In 2003, in the area between the port of Athinios and Cape Alonaki, it was located by Danish geologist Tom Pfeifer, buried in volcanic ash, an olive branch. The radio dating of this branch led to the installation of the catastrophic eruption that created the caldera of Santorini between 1627-1600 BC.
On July 4, 2007, a three-member team conducted an excavation at the same site and brought to light a 2-meter-long olive branch 20 cm in diameter, olive leaves and pottery from the Late Cycladic period. The fact that branches belonging to at least three different trees have been identified leads to the conclusion that prehistorically there was an olive grove in this place. [4]
Part of the findings is on display at the Museum of Minerals and Fossils in Perissa, Santorini.
The shipwreck of the Sea Diamond
Main entry: Shipwreck of Sea Diamond
On April 6, 2007, at 4 o'clock in the morning, the Greek flag cruise ship Diamond, with a capacity of 22,412 tons, sank in the bay of Athinios, next to Cape Alonaki (the northern end of the bay). The cruise ship had crashed the previous day in drought during the crash operations in the bay of Fira and had been towed to the point where it finally sank, [reference is pending]. From the day of the shipwreck until today, there are two French missing persons, a father and a daughter. [5] Also, to this day, a clean-up operation is being carried out in the sea area and on the nearby shores, inside the caldera, from the oil, oils and various chemicals on the ship that rise to the surface of the sea. [6] The Ministry of Merchant Shipping has pledged to commission a specialized international firm to conduct a study on issues related to the restoration of the marine environment, the pumping of oil and the lifting of the sunken cruise ship.
