Oreskeia (Ορέσκεια) Serres

Oreskeia [1] or Oreskia [2] (Byzantine Greek: Agios Stefanos) is a lowland village of the Regional Unit of Serres with an altitude of 140 meters [3].

Geography - History

Oreskeia is located south of the plain of Serres and at the northern foot of the Kerdylia mountains. The village is built a short distance west of Dafni, in an area with lush vegetation and plenty of water. To the north passes the torrent Dafni which after a while ends up in the river Ezovitis. In the same area and on a low hill, about 1 km north, there are the ruins of a tower. The area in a census of the 11th century is described as a suburb (ie settlement) with the name "Agios Stefanos". Under the tower there is a hermitage of Agia Marina carved on a rock of the hill, which in Mount Athos documents of the 11th century is referred to as "Theotokos tou Spilaiou" and a part of the Monastery of Iveron on Mount Athos. In 1923 the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior was built, while it was renovated in 1985. [5] Oreskia is 18.5 km SE. of Nigrita and 35 NA. of Serres. The village is officially mentioned in 1920 in the Official Gazette 2A - 04/01/1920 as Kizili to be attached to the then community of Eziovi (Dafnis). In 1926, with the Government Gazette 55A - 15/02/1926, it was renamed Oreskia [2]. According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Daphne, they constitute the Local Community of Dafni, which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Achinos of the Municipality of Visaltia and according to the 2011 census, has a population of 57 inhabitants [6].
