Oreini (Ορεινή) Ilia
Oreini is a village in the prefecture of Ilia, located 76 km northeast of Pyrgos, on the southeastern slopes of Mount Lampeia and at an altitude of 800 meters. Administratively it belongs to the Municipality of Ancient Olympia while previously it belonged to the Kapodistrian Municipality of Lampeia, of which it was a municipal district (together with the small settlement of Paliofytia) [1] [2].
In the past, there was a primary school and a high school in the village. The 2011 census recorded 194 permanent residents, while the homonymous Local Community had 206 [3]. The permanent residents, however, are about 70 engaged in animal husbandry.
The temples of the village
In Oreini there are many temples, centered on Agios Theodoros, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Agios Anargyros, Agios Georgios and Agios Ioannis the Theologian. The church of Agios Ioannis the Theologian is located on top of a mountain at an altitude of 1400 meters! . Originally the oldest small abyss was built by Slavs during the 11th to 15th century which survives to this day. On August 18, 2008, a new church was inaugurated in honor of the Saint by the faithful of Mostenitsa by His Eminence the Metropolitan of Ilia. German II and with the presence of many authorities of the region and the Prefecture. The Saint is solemnly celebrated on May 8, on September 26, but also on August 18, a day of remembrance of the inauguration of the new church. The view from the top of the mountain is magical while many weddings and baptisms take place there. The village also has many fountains with clear water while it is crossed by a river, which is full of plane trees and offers unique moments of relaxation.
Finally in Orini there is an abandoned desert church of Agios Vassilios and there was a small church in honor of Agia Varvara which was destroyed.
Designation
The older name of the village was Mostenitsa or Bostenitsa and probably has Slavic roots [4]. With the Government Gazette 156A of 08/08/1928 it was renamed to Oreini [5] [1].
