Lake Xyniada
Omvriaki got its name because it was located near the ancient lake of Xyniada (from the rainwater). The lake was located at an altitude of 463 meters and the area covered by its turquoise waters in winter at the highest altitude was about 33000 crowns, of which 5000 were swamp. The upper depth of the lake was 10 meters, while the waters that overflowed from the lake left through the torrent Babalis (five-mile) to the Onochonos (Sofaditiko) tributary of Pinios. The lake is historically mentioned by Herodotus and Apollonius of Rhodes. It should be noted that during the winter months the lake often froze.
Drying Up
In the year 1926, the Katzukh company undertook the drying up due to the malaria that plagued the area and, secondly, the need for new lands for the settlement of refugees. The specific company, after taking a loan from the National Bank, squandered the funds, so the work did not exceed the quarter.
In 1936 the company Xynias undertook the drying, which later due to the war was financially ruined, but after the end of the war it continued and completed the works giving in 1953 the possibility of cultivating the new land. In 1972, the drainage works were completed.
