Oechalia (Οἰχαλία), the name of cities in Euboea, Messenia and Thessaly

Oechalia in Euboea

A town of Euboea, in the district Eretria. The ancients were divided in opinion as to which of these places was the residence of Eurytus, whom Heracles defeated and slew. The original legend probably belonged to the Thessalian Oechalia, and was thence transferred to the other towns.

Pausanias 4.2.3

The Thessalians say that Eurytium, which to-day is not inhabited, was formerly a city and was called Oechalia. The account given by the Euboeans agrees with the statements of Creophylus in his Heraeleia ; and Hecataeus of Miletus stated that Oechalia is in Scius, a part of the territory of Eretria. Nevertheless, I think that the whole version of the Messenians is more probable than these, particularly on account of the bones of Eurytus, which my story will deal with later
