Nikopoli (Νικόπολη) Thessaloniki
Nikopoli (old name Zarova) is a settlement of the Municipality of Lagkada, 45 km NE of Thessaloniki. According to the 2001 census, it has 315 permanent residents.
The inhabitants of Nikopoli are mainly refugees from Nikopoli of Pontus, who inhabited it in 1914 after the liberation of the area in June 1913 (Lachana battle 21-06-1913). Until 16-06-1913, Nikopolis was inhabited mainly by exarchs who left it with the retreat of the Bulgarian forces to the north. The Greek inhabitants in the last years of the Turkish occupation were a minority and due to the terrorism of the komitatzids, they were forced to move to neighboring villages of the Lagada area (mainly Liti and Drymos). The first refugees to settle after 1914 were the Stefanidis family from Hatzikioi, Nikopoli, Pontos, who named the village "Nikopoli" in memory of their old homeland. The vast majority of the inhabitants come from the villages of Eskione and Hadjikioi (municipality of Nikopoli / Kolonia or Sebin Karahisar), Kailika (municipality of Zaras), Montola, Alatzachan and Katikioi (municipality of Keltzinis / Erzincan) of Pond.
