Nikokleia is a large lowland settlement (altitude 80 m. 1,316 cat.), Located in the southwestern part of the Regional Unit of Serres, at a distance of 33 km southwest of the city of Serres. It is administratively part of the municipality of Visaltia, based in Nigrita. Until 1928 it was called "Nicoslav". [1]
History
Ancient times
About 4 km south of Nikokleia, on the hill "Isar", where the ruins of an ancient castle are preserved, is the Roman station "Arason" which is known to us by the Ravenna cosmographer. The station may be identified with the ancient Visaltic city "Arolos" mentioned by the geographer Ptolemy. [2]
