Neo Pedino (Νέο Πεδινό) Limnos
Neo Pedino is the newest village of Limnos. Administratively it belongs to the Municipality of Lemnos of the North Aegean Region (Kallikratis program).
From 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it was the seat of the homonymous municipal district of the Municipality of Nea Koutali. It used to belong to the prefecture of Lesvos.
It was built in its current location after the 1968 earthquake, which destroyed the original village, Pedino. That is why it is referred to as Neo Pedino, while the original village is also called Paleo Pedino.
It is located in central Lemnos and has a population of 331 inhabitants, according to the 2001 Census.
Establishment
After the earthquake of 1968 that destroyed the original village and after suggestions from geologists, it was decided not to rebuild it in the same place but in another more stable one, near Nea Koutali. Since then, the two villages form a single residential complex, but they constituted two separate communities until 1998, when they joined the Municipality of N. Koutalis.
The settlement of Neos Pedinos started to be built in the early 70's and its construction was completed around 1976. It was built with fundraisers and with a salary contribution from all the civil servants of the country. It has good roads, with beautiful houses but without the traditional color of the old one. However, it is lush with large trees and a beautiful square around the main church of All Saints.
The Church
The Church of All Saints was built in 1996 with Dimitrios Kouleris as the contractor.
The beautiful church of All Saints Neos Pedinos was built with the help of all the pious people of Pedini. The pioneers of this glorious work of worship of the Triune God were the blessed pastor of Pedino, Fr. Konstantinos Ambanavas, and the active secretary of the former community, the late Dimitrios Kourniotis.
Both of them fought with all their might to preserve the unique religious relics of the Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Alexopyrgos.
Residents
Initially, the new village had a small population, since after the earthquake the inhabitants of the old village were scattered. In the 1980s it began to recover in population and in 1991 398 people were registered.
The majority of the people of Pedino are farmers and fishermen. The tourism sector has also revived in the last decade.
The learned teacher Aristophanes Kouleris, author of the interesting book "Memory of Heroes of Pedino Lemnos", comes from Pedino.
An active "Association of Pedinians in Attica" operates in Athens.
A great benefactor of the Old Pedino was Charalambos Hadjiharalambous of Odysseus who undertook the cost of electrification of the holy temple of St. John the Baptist. Today, the active Mrs. Victoria Kournioti has taken the initiative for the restoration of the bell tower of the holy temple. An initiative that needs the support of all the people of Pedini where the land is. Eventually, the cracks in the bell tower of the church of Agios Ioannis were completely restored following the actions of the Association of Pediniotes of Athens in Attica. At the initiative of the President of the Association Mr. Aristophanes Kouleris and the Mayor Mr. D. Voulgarakis, the necessary expenditure of the project was "saved" by the District of Lemnos and the most artistic historical bell tower returned to its original form.
Settlements
Apart from Neo Pedino, the municipal district of Pedino has three other settlements:
The Pedino or Old Pedino. It is the original village, which after 1968 has almost been abandoned. It has 5 inhabitants (2001).
The Mountains. The settlement has been recorded as separate since 1981. It has 281 inhabitants (2001).
The rocky islet of Alogonisi, located in the Gulf of Moudros with an area of 286 acres and a perimeter of 2,895 m. It was noted as an uninhabited settlement in 2001.
