Metalla (Μέταλλα) Serres

Metalla is a village in the prefecture of Serres with a population of 275 inhabitants. It belongs to the Municipality of Emmanuel Pappas.

The village has been an autonomous community since 1927, and until then it was part of the Dovistis community. It was originally called the community of Ano Nouskas, later it was renamed the community of Ano Dafnoudi and finally the community of Metalla. The community of Sykea with 111 inhabitants also belonged to the community. It was maintained until 1998 when it was merged with the Municipality of Emmanuel Pappas. [1].

History

A little north of today's villages of Metala and Sykia, on the high and steep hill of "Agios Athanasios", the site of a remarkable ancient coma (of Hellenistic and Roman times) was located. [2] In particular, the coma was built on the southern slope of the above hill, which was relatively smooth, in which ancient tombs and coins were discovered. Also, in another nearby place ("Ovatzik") a Hellenistic tomb was discovered, which contained about 400 copper coins (Alexander the Great, Cassander, Philippi, etc.). Finally, from "Agios Athanasios" or from the place "Ovatzik" come two tomb inscriptions of the beginning of the 2nd AD. century, which mention persons with Thracian names. [3] In the late Roman period, the coma was fortified with a citadel, parts of which are preserved at the top of the hill of "Agios Athanasios". The fortification of the coma was imposed, among others, mainly by its strategic position, as it controlled an ancient mountain road, which, through today's Mikropolis and Charitomenis (Drama), brought to the sources of the river Aggitis. [4]

Customs

With the majority of the inhabitants being of Pontic origin, the most important custom is considered to be the organization of similar cultural and music and dance events, widely known in the province as Panigiri. The last one takes place on an annual basis, on August 14 and 15, days celebrated by the local holy church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. [5] In addition to the villagers, a large number of people from the surrounding villages, as well as old residents who have moved to urban centers, take part in it.

Another settlement

The abandoned settlement of Metallo Serres is located in the prefecture.
