Meliki (Μελίκη) Imathia
Meliki is a mall town in the prefecture of Imathia and the seat of the homonymous municipality. It has a permanent population of 3,116 inhabitants (2011). [1]
General and historical data
Meliki is located east of Veria at a distance of 23 km from its center. Historically, it is included in the Greek-speaking rural settlements of the area of Roumluki and its original core dates back to Byzantine times [2]. Also, during the 17th century, people from the area of Hasia and Antichasia settled in Meliki. [3]
At the beginning of the 20th century, the settlement was inhabited by the families of Vlach cattle breeders from the area of Vermio [4], while the permanent population amounted to 525 inhabitants [2]. After the end of the Civil War, people from the Ship of Kozani settled in Meliki.
Today, the population of Meliki consists of native Macedonians, descendants of refugees from Thrace and people of Vlach origin. The inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture and beekeeping.
Culture
In Meliki, the custom of the Anastenarians takes place, which was brought to the area by the Thracian refugees [6]. The town is home to the Folklore Group of Meliki and Surroundings, as well as the Cultural Association of Thracians [7]. The Ethnographic Center George Meliki has also been operating since 2011. [8]
Personalities
Meliki is the birthplace of folklorist Giorgis Melikis [8], footballers Takis Karagiozopoulos [9], Antonis Natsouras and Costas Pavlopoulos, former athlete and current handball coach Grigoria Goulantzi Goliath [11] [11] of politicians Michalis Chalkidis [12] and Tasos Bartzokas [13].
