Malandrino (Μαλανδρίνο) Fokida

Malandrino (or Malandrinon) is a village p in the regional unit of Fokida, in the Peripheral Unit of Central Greece. It belongs to the Local Unit of Lidoriki (according to the program "Kallikratis") and is located at the western foot of Mount Gkiona (in its southern extension) and at an altitude of 580-590 meters above sea level. Until 2010 it belonged to the Local Department of Malandrini of the (former) Municipality of Lidoriki of the Prefecture of Fokida. Its coordinates are: Latitude 38.4531188615 and Longitude 22.2365709958.

From 1836 to 1869 the village, under the name "Malandrini", was part of the Municipality of Tolofonos. Subsequently, it was subordinated to the Municipality of Aigiti as "Malandrinon" while in 1912 it was declared a Community. According to one estimate, its name comes from the Italian-Venetian language while another view speaks of its connection with the Maladrin Baron who had its headquarters in the Middle Ages in this area.

It is also known for the highest security prisons established in its territory since 2001. [1]

Malandrino in antiquity

The location of Malandrino has been identified with the ancient city of Fysko, which from the 4th c. e.g. was the seat of the community of Esperia Lokra. The citadel is located on the hill south of the village, where the cemetery is. The location of the hill overlooks the surrounding area and offers excellent views of the valley and Lake Mornos. There, as well as in the surrounding area, are the few remains of a large and important ancient fortification, much of which has been destroyed or stoned in the past, while another - still unknown - remains underground. Remains of walls and buildings, columns, inscriptions and other remains of antiquities are preserved. Archaeologist L. Lerat, [2] in his book "Esperioi Lokroi", gives an extensive description of the wall of the ancient city. No systematic excavations have been carried out at the archeological site.
